Probationers Discharged From Supervision: A Study of the Adjustment and Attitude of Fifteen Male Youthful and Adult Offenders Supervised by the Writer From May 1, 1953 to April 1, 1956, at the Yonkers Court of Special Sessions

Peter Robert La Colla, Fordham University

Abstract

At present there seems to be a generally renewed interest in the subject of probation and parole. This, added to the factors described below, led the writer to choose his dissertation topic. The writer is currently on an educational leave of absence from the Probation Bureau of the Yonkers Court of Special Sessions, having been employed there as a probation officer from May 1, 1953. From that time to the present, October 1957 he has supervised numerous probationers over sixteen years of age. Because of this personal contact it was decided that a sampling of a group of these offenders who have completed their probationary terms would provide a fruitful object of study. Unlike most surveys of this type, the writer was afforded the unique opportunity of interviewing farmer clients with whom he had had personal contact. Specific details concerning the background and setting of the study will be brought out in the next chapter.
