A Psychiatric Hospital Program Change From Long-Term Care to Dynamic Approach to Mental Illness: A Trend Study of St. Vincent's Hospital of Westchester County, 1879-1958
Abstract
The large, white frame Victorian structure known as St. Vincent’s Hospital of Westchester County has been a familiar landmark in the memory of even the eldest of local residents. Five years ago the name was changed from St. Vincent’s Retreat; today the institution looks ahead to plans for much greater expansion. This crossroads period seems a propitious time for a study of the first five years of change, using as a frame of reference modern psychiatric treatment and care of the mentally ill as we know it today.
