Teaching Religion in the Elementary Grades
Abstract
The aim of this study is to apply in simple fashion a few outstanding principles and ideas of teaching process to the subject of elementary religious training. It is to be feared that in our presentation of the catechism we have adhered too closely to memory rote methods at the expense of Child interest. The feeling is quite general that our catechetical ideas have not kept pace with the advance in profane didactic methods. There is growing opposition to the idea that the formulas of faith must be memorized and that understanding and interest should be sacrificed to accuracy of expression.
