Marital Discord in the Hard Core Families: A Study of Four Cases Known to Family Service, Catholic Charities of New York, 1955-1957, in Which the Multi-Problems Stemmed From the Poor Husband-Wife Relationship
Abstract
Marital discord is an ever present problem in our complex society. It can lead to behavior difficulties in children, such as truancy. It is related to problems of alcoholism, economic pressure, poor housing, and personality problems which can deteriorate the family as a unit. The children are the ones who suffer the most as a result of marital conflict. For this reason, society, has set certain minimum standards of child care; it cannot afford to permit family life to deteriorate to the point of neglect, delinquency, chronic dependency, or mental illness. It expects social agencies to help those parents who are unable to provide the necessary support and direction for their children. This responsibility must be discharged by active social work efforts to strengthen the family as a unit. The Church as well as other religious congregations, educators, marriage clinics, courts, social workers, psychiatrists, and others have been struggling to find the means of effectively coping with the problems of marital discord.
