The Community Organization Process in the Formation of a Parish Youth Program: A Study of an Adult Volunteer Committee in Holy Name Parish, Brooklyn, in the Process of Establishing a Schedule of Youth Activities

Gerald P Ryan, Fordham University

Abstract

Background of the Study. One of the primary functions of the Catholic Youth Organization is to provide a fuller and a richer leisure time program for Catholic youth. In order to achieve this goal or, perhaps, to realize this dream, many methods and procedures, many kinds of study and research must be employed in order to bring about a greater adjustment of discoverable needs with available resources. While the CYO in the Brooklyn Diocese has sponsored an enormous number of programs in the past eighteen years, yet there are always new developments and new challenges. One of the greatest objectives that the CYO has sought to fulfill has been the establishment of self-sustaining committees of operation within the parish itself. It has been the contention of the CYO that the strength and vigor of a parish youth program depends largely on the kind of organizational structure that can be administered by the adult lay volunteers of the parish.
