The History, Development, and Application of Play as a Useful Factor in Education

Agnes D Cavanagh, Fordham University

Abstract

Before considering the history, development, or application of play, it is well to seek an explanation of the term "play." In defining this term let us first consider it from the evolutionary point of view. The general principles of evolution are now universally accepted and each year finds some new emphasis laid upon the doctrine of evolution in determining educational principles, each emphasizing the value of play in education. Just what play is, we shall know, when we find out what evolution is. We interpret play in the light of the known facts of evolution, including the evolution of man and of institutions. Again the study of man and man's institutions are made a basis for the interpretation of play. Consider, if you will, certain established points of evolution which are directly applicable to education.
