Settlement House Services in Two Public Housing Projects: A Study of the James Weldon Community Center, East Harlem, New York, 1947-1957
Abstract
Background of the Study. In 1948 ten local social agencies cooperated to establish the James Weldon Johnson Community Center. This was the first settlement in a Public Housing Project in East Harlem. New Public Housing greatly improved the living conditions of the residents. But rehousing of people alone can not cure social ills. There must be some design through planned programs with people which work toward the change of basic attitudes, values and the traditional ways of doing things.
