Sibling Rivalry: A Case Study of Six Children Who Displayed Extreme Competitiveness and/or Hostility Toward Their Sibling and Who Were Known to Saint Charles Guidance Clinic, Brooklyn, New York, 1952–1959

Kathryn A Swift, Fordham University

Abstract

The writer’s interest in sibling rivalry stemmed from frequent observance of its existence in families of her acquaintance both in her personal and professional experience. At her second year field work placement, Saint Charles Guidance Clinic, 191 Joralemon Street, Brooklyn, New York, she was informed of the frequency with which this problem was encountered. It was also pointed out that surprisingly, in most cases, exaggerated rivalry was not the reason for referral but generally was uncovered during the course of treatment. Therefore, after some preliminary exploration in order to determine the availability of case material, the decision was made to further explore the problem of sibling rivalry by the case study method.
