Adolescent Unwed Mothers: A Case Study of the Predisposing, Precipitating and Exciting Factors in the Pregnancy of Three Unwed Mothers Known to Yonkers Office of the Family Service Division of Catholic Charities, 1954-1958

Abstract

Following on Christ’s exhortation that whatever you do for the least of his brothers you do for Him, the Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese on New York, organized in 1920, was instituted to offer counsel and service to families and individuals who are faced with emotional, environmental, and spiritual problems. With this as their frame of reference, Catholic Charities recognized these areas as the prime source of difficulty in t he case of the unmarried mother. These “little ones” become the refugees from public criticism. “They neither expect nor receive understanding from society; and to their already heavy personal problems is added the weight of threatened punishments and enforced secrecy.“
