Retarded Children in Catholic Residential Center: A Study of Maryhaven (The Wharton Memorial Institute), Fort Jefferson, Long Island, With Emphasis on Its Role in Changing Community, 1946-1961
Abstract
This is a study of Maryhaven from 1946 to the present and a survey of its program and the needs of the community. The community involved is made up of mentally retarded Catholic children, between the ages of seven and sixteen, who live in the Diocese of Rockville Centre which covers Nassau and Suffolk Counties in the State of New York. The survey is being done to determine if the program of the institution is broad enough to handle the problem of the mentally retarded in the community and if not, how should it be expanded.
