Abstract

It is estimated that there are 1,860,000 persons with epilepsy in the United States, 167,000 in New York State and 77,000 in New York City. Thus, one percent of the 1 total population of the United States are afflicted with epilepsy. This figure is based on our Armed Forces' draft and medical discharge figures, adjusted to the full age range of our population. Certain individuals have a predisposition to seizures or are "latent" epileptics but go through life seizure free if no precipitant factor is added. It has been estimated that ten to twelve percent of the total 2 population are in this group.
