Alcoholism and Marital Stability: A Case Study of Six Married Male Alcoholics in Treatment at the New York State University Alcoholic Clinic, Brooklyn, 1960

Joseph M Sullivan, Fordham University

Abstract

The focus then of this study is the stability factors in the marriages studied. It may be true that in general the factors of stability are the same in all marriages but the strength of the alcoholic marriage is constantly being tested and the spouse may often have to recall to mind the motivation for maintaining this union. It is likely that the spouse of an alcoholic is more aware of the strengths of her marriage, since she is constantly falling back on them.
