Abstract

Historically speaking, interest in, and services to, the unmarried mother have been centered primarily on her child. This child who has been known through the ages as base-born, bastard, illegitimate, out-of-wedlock; and at present the natural child has generally been seen as a focus of pity while his mother is an object of scorn.
