Court Referrals to the Catholic Charities Guidance Institute: A Study of 5 Cases Referred to the Catholic Guidance Institute by the Manhattan Children's Court to Determine the Influence of This Authoritative Agency as Reflected in Treatment

Abstract

The Catholic Church has always staunchly maintained that the responsibility for the rearing and training of the child rests upon the shoulders of the parents. Pope Pius XI, in his encyclical on "The Christian Education of Youth" reiterates this attitude. Speaking in relation to the home, he says: "The first natural and necessary element in the environment...is the family." He goes on to say that this has been so ordained by God Himself. Further, he points out that the child's training and education "will be more effective and lasting" in a "well ordered and well disciplined Christian family". Later in the encyclical, he laments the fact that family education has declined; and a comparison is made between the preparation gone into for callings of a more transitory nature, while preparation for a fundamental duty and obligation of educating and training children is sadly lacking.
