School Social Work: A History of the Development of Social Welfare Services for Children Within the Educational Setting, With Emphasis on Current Practices as They Exist in Three Areas of Maine: City, Town, and Country, 1620 – 1961

Abstract

Background of the Study. Essentially, this study has evolved as the results of three significant factors ; 1. As a graduate student in education our horizons were considerably broadened with respect to the field of social work and the specific area of child welfare. We were impressed with what appeared to be a growing relationship between the fields of education and social work - at least in theory. 2. Later, as a teacher, the question arose as to the type of relationship that really existed. This was prompted by the situation where we recognized a need for a close relationship but in reality found it wanting. 3. Still later, as a Child Welfare Worker for the State of Maine, the question was reactivated and strengthened when we seemed unable to affect a working relationship with most of the schools in our area, despite our best efforts. Consequently, the whole area of school social work or more appropriately, social welfare services for children within the school setting, has remained uppermost in the mind of the author and has now been made the subject of this study.
