Drug- Therapy: A Study of the Knowledge and Attitudes of the Social Workers and Groupmothers Regarding the Use of Psychopharmacologic Drugs at Saint Agatha Home for Children, Nanuet, New York, 1961–1962

Abstract

Background of the study. In the spring of 1960 Dr. Dina Sobel gave a talk to the social workers, groupmothers teachers and counsellors concerning the new program of drug therapy that she was initiating at St. Agatha Home. This group saw films of some of the dramatic results obtained through the use of psychiatric medicines with schizophrenic children at Rockland State Hospital. For the author, and many of those present, it was the first contact with drug therapy. As we listened to Dr. Sobel's presentation we wondered if some of our disturbed clients could be helped through these drugs. In the months that followed we noted, with great interest, the progress of a boy whom we had known to be severely withdrawn. We were impressed by the change that took place in his appearance and later, in his behavior.
