Abstract

Mental disorders have always constituted one of man’s most serious public health and social problems because of their damaging effect and the number of people affected. However, psychiatry, with the assistance of other related and scientific disciplines, has made a great contribution to society in attempting to meet this problem. In recent years, as a result of the gains attained by psychiatry, the public in general has become increasingly aware of the benefits of this specialized branch of medicine, and a larger number of people than ever before are seeking psychiatric help. In attempting to meet these demands, psychiatric social work, because of its close relation to psychiatry, has an important role in this undertaking.
