Alcoholics and the Termination of Treatment A Survey of Twenty-Three Alcoholics Which Terminated Casework Treatment at the State University Alcoholic Clinic, Kings County Hospital, From September 1955 to June 1956

William Francis Guttieri, Fordham University

Abstract

The writer's interest in the study was prompted by the ever-increasing material published in regard to the alcoholic as a poor treatment risk and a patient requiring special adaptations in therapeutic technique. Alcoholics are noted to be poor treatment risks, and various reasons have been given for this. Doctor Franz Alexander states that the reason. why psychiatry as a whole has not been more outstanding in treating the alcoholic is that the recognition on the part of the patient of his own illness, and need for help is lacking. He states further that the need for frank truths and cooperation is the essence of psychotherapy.
