Pica: A Multi-Disciplined Approach to the Etiology of This Phenomenon With Emphasis on Four Children Admitted to Kings County Hospital With a Diagnosis of Lead Poisoning, Summer, 1963

Abstract

During the summer of 1963, I had the opportunity to work as a medical social worker at Kings County Hospital. In addition to a male medical ward assignment, I was also given responsibility of two pediatrics wards. It was during my work in the latter that I became interested in the subject of the present study. Before my association with Kings County Hospital, I had little knowledge of lead poisoning as a result of the eating of plaster and paint, but its repeated incidence aroused my interest in the circumstances leading up to the phenomenon.
