A Descriptive Study of Case Work With Puerto Rican Families Whose Children Were Under Institutional Care Catholic Guardian Children's Home Service Unit, September 1, 1952 to December 31, 1955
Abstract
Background of the Study. Child placement prevention and case-work with families toward reunion with their children has been of great concern to social agencies in recent years. Toward these goals Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of New York established two projects with the help of the Greater New York Fund, namely, Child Placement Prevention Unit and the Children's Home Service Unit. The latter was established as a special service unit within Catholic Guardian Society in September 1952. It was established with two major objectives: one, to facilitate the discharge of children to their own homes, and secondly, to demonstrate the value of intensive family casework while children are in foster caring institutions. Through the discharge of many of these children who had been institutionalised for a considerable time, the project enabled other children needing this service to be accepted at the child caring homes. Approximately one third of the unit case load has been cases of Puerto Rican families and one third of the institutional population in the Archdiocese of New York is believed to be Puerto Rican.The origin of this particular study lies in the writer's personal experience in the Children's Home Service Unit, her previous work with Puerto Rican families in the Family Service Division of Catholic Charities, and her own knowledge of the group. Writer was born in Puerto Rico and has lived most of her life there. The major duties in these positions concerned themselves mostly in rendering casework services to Puerto Rican families.
