Abstract

Background of the Study. Almost eighty years before the Pilgrims landed on Plymouth Rock the first Mass was said at a spot in or near the present city of Mobile, The early annals of the Diocese of Mobile-Birmingham provides a fertile field for those interested in American history. The invasion by Hernando DeSoto and his Spanish soldiers of this section of the country offers a glamour and romance unsurpassed in the pioneer history of this hemisphere, As Alabama Catholics glance backward across the chasm of time the deeds and accomplishments of the pioneer Faithful present a wonderful legacy of indomitable courage and devotion to the Church. A martyred death awaited many of the early missionaries and laymen as they held aloft the Cross along the unchartered wilderness that was then the Diocese of Mobile.
