Abstract

The well-being of all persons is of general concern to everyone. However, the deeper interest lies with those who will some day be the future adults and leaders of our society. Today, great emphasis is placed upon the healthy growth of our young people. With the exposure of the deviant and/or disturbed behavior of many youngsters, considerable alarm is aroused which urges an investigation of probable reasons for their behavior. The knowledge and skills of many professions are sought as possible channels which may provide us with some of the answers. Books are being written, studies are constantly in progress, new ideas and methods are continuously being adapted, and opinions are being voiced, The normal and abnormal behavior of our youngsters is carefully scrutinized. Prevention and rehabilitation are key words in this quest, especially when it is recognized that some of these youngsters are seriously maladjusted. Programs of all types under a variety of auspices are geared to serve them. Therefore, it is extremely important that any information and knowledge obtained from these programs should be shared with others who are working with our potential adults. If labors are pursued in isolation, the opportunity for expansion of ideas is minimal, and ultimately, our young people do not benefit from the hard work of many dedicated persons. The desperate need for understanding is evident in order to restore happiness and to maintain proper balance in their lives. No matter who the child is, or what he or she has done, there still exists the unrelenting search for the key to an integrated and worthwhile life: that is, something to do, something to love, something to hope for.
