Unmarried Mothers: A Study of Recidivism Among Unmarried Mothers Known to Bridgeport Catholic Charities, 1960-1964

Abstract

History and literature have shown us that illegitimacy has always been a problem of concern to mankind. However, only in this century has this topic been widely and publicly discussed in the press and among the general public. Illegitimacy is less extensive in the United States than in some other countries, but in a society that accepts marriage and the family as its cornerstone, this deviation is considered serious for the Nation as well as for the individuals involved. Many authors, professional and non-professional, alarmingly see the rising increase of unmarried mothers as a symptom of the deterioration and decay of the basic values of our society.
