Abstract

The sheer magnitude of the nation’s mental health needs has made imperative the sincere and conscientious evaluation of our means for coping with the problem. The psychiatric team is one such means by which one can Insure that the total needs of those patients who are severely emotionally handicapped will be adequately met. Whereas fifty years ago, treatment for the mentally ill consisted mainly of custodial care in asylums, to-day, the patient in a psychiatric hospital is provided with active treatment by a group of experts, each functioning with a high degree of professional skill, within their particular area of competency. Indeed, one of the characteristics of our increasingly complex social milieu is the development of specialists and the idea of a team seems to be one of the best techniques for co-ordinating their efforts.
