The Newark Experience A Study of Planned Action in Fluoridation

Nathan Robert Baker, Fordham University

Abstract

This study will concentrate on the technical operations of proponents of fluoridation in initiating and effecting action on the proposal in Newark, New Jersey. This is a study of the planned actions of a committee of proponents as they relate to the principles of Dommunity Organization. The study will not investigate, report upon, nor conclude upon the effects or use of sodium fluoride in any form, as a preventive measure for tooth decay. The problem of effecting successful action in fluoridation seems to stem from the failure of proponents to prepare and fully involve the total community in the process before the issue becomes polarized. As a result the proponents of fluoridation either violate or fail to implement the principles of organization and this has resulted in the stalemate of the movement, increased the expense of actions, and continues the chances of effecting a successful action to as little as fifty percent.
