Unmarried Mothers: A Study of the Shelter Division of Angel Guardian Home, Brooklyn, New York, 1934-1959

Abstract

"What would the charity of God have profited us, if His mercy had not come to our aid?" was one of the thoughts that Mother Catherine McAuley left to her daughters. And Christ in His Mercy, has counselled us among other precepts, to give shelter to the homeless. Who could be considered more homeless than the girl, who, finding that she is to bear a child out-of-wedlock, leaves her own home and looks about for one to help her. What relief must surge into the heart of the girl when she realizes that there is a place to which she can go, where- in she will escape the curious eyes of the world and find acceptance and understanding. Frequently overcome with shame at her own deeds which she cannot hide, and very often abandoned by those to whom she is accustomed to turn for help, she seeks a place of refuge and shelter.
