Abstract

Background of the Study. "Let us fit the children for earth without unfitting them for Heaven. For various reasons some children are unable to live in their own homes with their own families. For the past fifty-seven years, the Catholic Home Bureau of Catholic Charities of New York has been providing homes for Catholic children who need care away from their own families. One of the vital parts of its program is the Homefinding Department. Here homes are sought, studied and evaluated in order to supply the need of foster care for neglected and dependent children. These children who have to be removed from their own homes, are raised by foster parents who become substitute fathers and mothers for them. In order to fulfill this exalted role, the prospective foster parents must not merely demonstrate ability to provide adequate physical care but also show forth in their lives such a degree of practical Catholicity which will insure a spiritual environment for a child.
