A Descriptive Study of Forty-Three Veterans on Trial Visit From the New York Regional Office Who Were Discharged or Returned to the Hospital in 1955

Charles Allan Peter Smith, Fordham University

Abstract

Background of the Study. From September of 1955 to May of 1956 the writer, as a student at Fordham University’s School of Social Service, had a field work placement at the New York Regional Office of the Veteran’s Administration. During this period an intense interest was generated in the Veterans Administrations program of supervising the mentally ill patients on convalescent leave in the community. The writer participated in this program and was able to note that some of the patients showed a more marked degree of adjustment than others. It was especially apparent in two instances that the veterans were prepared for discharge from the program sooner than the regular period of convalescence. This study grew out of the writer’s interest in the factors that contribute to the successful adjustment of these veterans.
