A Study of One Hundred Families With Mentally Defective Children Under Five Years of Age
Abstract
The drive for self-perpetuation among all living creatures is generally recognized. In human beings this continuance of the species is usually carried out within the institution of marriage. It would be difficult to record here the hopes, joys and frustrations a man and woman live through before they attain parenthood, but all that has been staked and risked appears to recede into the background on the day the child, male or female, greets the world with its first cry. Even in subsequent births in the same normal family there is still present the suspense and excitement around the arrival of the new infant.
