Abstract

Timeliness and Importance of the Investigation. The United Counseling Service of Bennington County, * has existed, as an entity, for approximately two years. Such a short span of time would seem to be, perhaps, too limited a period to warrant an historical study. However, the present agency came into being as the result of a merger of the Bennington Family Service Center and the Bennington Child Guidance Clinic, as well as the Bennington Mental Health Association, an autonomous local group which sponsored the Bennington Child Guidance Clinic. Therefore, because the Counseling Service had its roots in other community agencies, in a sense, its own history dates back to the origin of the parent agencies, and thus covers a period of about ten years. The Bennington Family Service Center had the distinction of being the first family service agency to have been established in Vermont.
