Abstract

Background of the Study. The early work of Catholic Charities helped immeasurably in the adjustment of immigrants to the strange and complex American scene. Large numbers of immigrants homes were broken by sickness, economic difficulties, various types of mental and emotional conflicts, and other disintegrating forces. One of the most important concerns which developed for the Church was the rearing of children from these broken homes in their traditional religious faith.During the last fifteen years a new group of people have immigrated to this country, especially to New York City. This group of people came from Puerto Rico, a Carribbean island that has been part of the United States since 1898. Although these immigrants have been American citizens since 1917 their native language is Spanish and they have kept many of the cultural values of their mother country, Spain. As a new group of people in a country where the language and culture are different, they have been faced with many problems. In their attempts to adjust to a different culture, many homes have been broken and children have been placed with different child caring agencies in the city.
