Alcoholics on Convalescent Care: A Statistical Study on Twenty-Five Patients Released From New York State Mental Hospital Who Were Receiving Treatment at the Manhattan Aftercare Clinic, New York, 1959

Elveta White, Fordham University

Abstract

As we are all aware alcoholism is one of society's most perplexing problems. Many books, articles and dissertations have been written on the possible causes and prevention of this disease. Several organizations have arisen to treat the alcoholic and to prevent future break- downs when alcoholism has been arrested. The author was interested in one of the problems of these patients, namely what happens to inebriates who are both alcoholics and have a psychotic breakdown. An aftercare clinic would offer extensive information for this type of study because it deals with the alcoholic patient after his release from the hospital, and one is able to see how well he has adjusted in society after having been treated and having abstained from alcohol while in the hospital.
