A Social Study of the Bronx Hospital

Annie Long Humphries, Fordham University

Abstract

It was this attitude of man towards his fellow-beings that was prevalent in the Borough of the Bronx between 1900 and 1910 when an increase in the population grew immensely, specifically around the area where the Bronx Hospital is now located. In the past decade this influx of people has been largely of Negro and Puerto Rican racial strains. Some of these migrants were old and some were young; some were wealthy and some were poor. With these extreme differences in age and economic status, the community was faced with many problems upon which each group contributed to similar situations but from different angles. It seemed reasonable that hospitalization for the care of the sick and injured would clarify the degree of intensity of the relation of each group upon one specific problem. The aged people contributed to the large degree of illness existing in the community at that particular time which brought about a greater need for hospitals and hospital facilities.
