A Study of Emotional Problems Presented by Five Adolescents With Tuberculosis
Abstract
Impetus for this study grew out of the author's own experience as a medical social worker at St. Joseph's Hospital for Chest Diseases. In doing case work with some of the adolescents hospitalized for tuberculosis, it was always a pondering question as to whether the illness created the emotional problems presented by each individual, or whether the problems existed before and were intensified by the superimposition of the illness. Some further questions arose and are presented here: Why did one adolescent handle his illness in a particular way and another adolescent handle his illness in another way? Is the behavior shown by adolescents with tuberculosis normal adolescent behavior, and, if not, where does the behavior deviate and why? Does this patient or that patient react to his illness in the way that he does due to the psychological problems of tuberculosis, or is it due to the individual's earlier experiences in life and the conditioning which follows. Finally, does tuberculosis intensify the already existing problems of the average adolescent and how?
