Background and Timeliness of the Study. The Child Guidance Movement as it is known today first appeared in 1922, following recognition by the National Committee for Mental Hygiene of the need for clinics not connected with hospitals and juvenile courts. As a result of this awareness a national demonstration program was established by the Committee with the cooperation of the Commonwealth Fund. These clinics, from the time of their inception, dealt with the total personality of the child. The services of social workers, psychologists, and psychiatrists each with his own peculiar approach were readily utilized to help children having severe emotional difficulties.
