Ann Joseph Garahan, Fordham University

Abstract

Timeliness of Investigation. There has been a growing awareness in the field of Social Work of the necessity for formulating a Philosophy that will express the essence of the concepts which underlie the aims and methods of practise in this new profession. Much has been said and written about this need, but the recent self awareness of social work as a profession, (It claims a half century of existence)! the number of streams of thought and the variety of developments in method that have contributed to it, have made the task a forbidding one. In 1952 a book entitled the Philosophy of Social Work, written by Herbert Bisno, who is Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of Oregon, was published and was greeted by leaders in the field as a "beginning on the laborious task of building a philosophical foundation for the profession which is destined to play an increasingly significant role in modern life.
