Scouting: A Study of the Scouting Program Under Catholic Auspices in the Diocese of Rockville Centre, Long Island, New York, 1959

Abstract

The following quotation is taken from an address delivered by His Holiness Pope Pius XII to the delegates from fourteen countries in attendance at the Seventh International Conference of Catholic Leaders in Scouting held in the Domus Pacis in Rome, Italy, June 5 to 8, 1952.Everyone knows that religion has held first place in Scouting from the start, but you are also aware of the added strength and precision given by Catholicism to the educational work you pursue. For you it is not merely a question of training better citizens, more active, more devoted to the common good of the Temporal City: you must also train better sons of the Church. In the Catholic Church, the mission of the apostolate goes down from the priest to the faithful; and, in our days all the faithful are called upon to collaborate, each according to his capacity in this apostolate. This quotation serves to point out the particular significance given to Scouting by the Catholic Church. Scouting under Catholic auspices becomes an instrument for developing within Catholic Scouts and Scouters a living faith which is so necessary in our materialistic world of today. The Hierarchy of the Catholic Church in the United States have recognized the potential of Scouting and it has been widely adopted by them for use in their youth-serving programs.
