Cancer Patients and Social Service: A History of Medical Social Work at the Memorial Center for Cancer and Allied Diseases, New York City, 1884-1959
Abstract
Cancer is one of the greatest challenges facing the world of scientific research at the present time. Medical personnel in countless laboratories and hospital wards are endeavoring to unlock the elusive secrets of this disease. With the mobilization of these physical and intellectual resources, it is hoped that the conquest of cancer will be realized in the near future.Cancer has been known to the medical profession for upwards of 3,000 years, but anthropologic studies show that tumors existed in prehistoric times in the bodies of dinosaurs, armored fish, and in the Ape Man of Java.
