Mental Health: An Historical Sketch of the Growth of State Hospital Care of Mentally Ill Adults in New York State, With Emphasis on the Social Services, 1816-1961
Abstract
Background of the Study. Two salient features arise clearly from any contemplation of the history of the growth of care for the mentally ill. One is that the increasing complexity and concomitant expense involved in a continually developing society's ever-growing problem of how best to care for its mentally disturbed members has led inevitably to more and more governmental responsibility for such care, specifically through state departments of mental hygiene and state hospitals. The other is the gradual but radical growth of significance in the role of the social worker in helping to implement the ever-growing sense of responsibility, as well as the greater intelligence, which society is increasingly bringing to bear on the problem.
