Catholic Youth Service: The Formation of a Community Centered Program for Delinquent Children in the Williamsburg, Fort Greene Areas of Brooklyn, 1960-1961
Abstract
Juvenile delinquency is a topic discussed in New York City on all levels of our society. It has been highlighted in newspapers by news items and pictures of teenage gang activity and juvenile crimes ranging from petty thefts to murder. People in the community discuss the deplorable state of the young in their neighborhood; the police find their duty time alive with incidents involving teenagers ; school teachers, heads of recreation centers, religious leaders, find themselves facing innumerable crises from anti-social, threatening behaviour; and politicians are considering means to assist the community to combat the dangers that citizens experience from a portion of the city’s youth.
