The Education of Gifted Children in Public Schools

Jane E Monahan, Fordham University

Abstract

The education of gifted children in public schools has engaged the attention of educators for several years and some experimental work has been done to meet the needs of these children in public schools. This paper aims to treat of what has been done to date in our public schools for the education of the gifted child. The recognition of individual differences in school children and the present practice of classification based on the results of intelligence tests have awakened an unusual interest in the needs of the gifted child. Social agencies and society in general have for years given special attention to the delinquent, the feeble-minded and other deviates at the lower end of the scale so that special procedures with these have been adopted and special provisions made for their education and training under both private and public auspices. It is only recently that special study has been given to the needs of the gifted child.
