The Teacher's Use of Standardized Arithmetic Tests

Harriet R Byrne, Fordham University

Abstract

Within the past twenty years the influence of our scientific age has been felt in the field of education. The result has been the introduction of the standardized test as an accurate, scientific means of measuring educational products. The standardized test is a scientifically devised measure of simple or single abilities of pupils in any subject. The conditions under which it is given are carefully controlled. After careful experimentation and scientific summation, standards for achievement have been established for each test. The purpose of the standardized test is to measure and thereby increase the efficiency of our educational system. Tests have always been used to estimate pupils' abilities, to determine the efficiency of school systems, and to make a comparison between them. Another means of determining efficiency in education has been by an examination of the methods of teaching employed. The absence of an objective standard and the reliance upon personal opinion with its limitations, make both these means inadequate and unsatisfactory. The standardized test offers a means of accurate measurement with objective standards.
