Survey of Admissions of Children to the Age of Twelve Years to Kings County Psychiatric Hospital From January, 1954 Through December, 1954

A. Paul Parks, Fordham University

Abstract

Background of the Study. During the time the writer spent as a student in field work placement at Kings County Hospital, Psychiatric Division, he became interested in the types of cases being admitted to the Children's Ward for psychiatric observation. Most practitioners in the field become aware, very early in their professional careers that one of the most vulnerable periods during the development and growth of the individual is that of adolescence. Much time is spent by the student and the professional worker in the study of this particular period with its many facets in the physical, emotional and intellectual spheres. But what of children, particularly below twelve years of age who are being admitted to a psychiatric ward for observation? One is apt to ask; how many children are usually admitted to the ward, from where do they come in the community and what are some of the final dispositions made on these cases?
