The Oral Method of Teaching French

Helen M McLaughlin, Fordham University

Abstract

In studying or teaching French it should be the aim of every one to use the best possible method for the most accurate assimilation of that language.Perhaps the best way of mastering a language is to plunge immediately into the spoken language without first delving into the mysteries of the printed page. I say "mysteries" for is not a page of a foreign language a mystery with its scores of difficult words and accents. An advisable plan would be to go to the foreign country, mingle with the people, listen to them, become accustomed to their habits, fix sounds, words and groups of words in your memory. Do not try to learn the grammar or attempt to write, merely acquire the language as one would the mother tongue.
