Abstract

In the social service field the place of the volunteer has been the topic of much discussion, divergence of opinion and practice. Several cycles can be noted in the evolution of social work. Its actual beginnings were with volunteer. Groups of individuals recognizing the needs of the community came together for the purpose of finding means to meet these problems. The programs they developed grew to the point where they were no longer able to be administered on a part time basis. They were large scale enterprises requiring full time responsibility. Paid staff became a necessity and with this the development of professionally trained personnel.
