The Application of the Habit of Reflective Thought in the Teaching of High School Mathematics
Abstract
According to our modern conception of the ends and aims of education, only those subjects ought to be incorporated in a course of study which prepare the pupil to become a useful member of society. All educators agree that the science of mathematics is a fundamental subject in the school curriculum. The reasons given are the following: The pupils acquire a certain amount of knowledge which they will find necessary in future life. Through the solution of problems they are then taught how to make an application of the information thus acquired. Furthermore, their vocabulary is enriched by the addition of several hundred words and expressions. Hence it follows that there are two phases of mathematics which the teacher must keep in mind in her treatment of the subject the content element, and the disciplinary or power element.
