Emotionally Disturbed Children Admitted to the Psychiatric Institute: A Comparison of the Time Lapse Between Recognition of Disturbed Behavior and Referral for Treatment of Ten Boys Hospitalized in 1935 and 1950
Abstract
Background of the Study. The total setting of the emotionally disturbed child, as well as the emotionally disturbed adult, must be the springboard for treatment. The most important single factor in the child’s development is his inter-personal relationships, i.e., relationships to parents, siblings and peers. Thus, to understand the pathology in any emotional disturbance we must turn to the child’s development in these areas. By this means we can attempt to determine the etiology of the disturbance, viz., in this study, childhood schizophrenia and primary behavior disorders.
