The Results of Psychological Survey in an Institution Caring for Dependent and Delinquent Children
Abstract
In the summer of 1922, a psychological survey of the population of the New York Catholic Protoctory was made in order to deter mine what percentage of mental deficiency existed in the institutions. In as much as this institution cares not only for delinquents children but also for dependent children, it was felt that a psychological comparison between the two would prove interesting and instructive, and might have a very definite practical value. It should be understood from the outset that the defective and delinquent groups are separated completely, and also that the delinquents are grouped into first, second and third offenders. This study will shew the psychological scoring of these respective groups.Rapid strides have been made of recent years in the matter of testing intelligence. The original scale was devised by Binot and Simon, two French psychologists. It was seen found that this scale, which depended largely on the use and comprehension of language, was difficult of application in its original form to American children, and se various modifications of it have been made in this country.
