Abstract

Throughout the history of the Church, She has endeavored to fulfill the mandate to charity issued by Christ. In the Archdiocese of New York the Church has extended her spiritual and social resources through the local parishes and through many and varied agencies to people in their neighborhoods. The Family Service Department of Catholic Charities has always considered itself an auxiliary to the parishes in their services to the social, material, and spiritual needs of their people. As such, it reaches out to provide a service which is accessible to people as resources allow. In serving people the Family Service worker, investigating the family brings to them the many services available through Catholic Charities itself and through other resources in the community. Frequently these people are sent to Family Service by their local parish or by a school, or hospital, or by any other community resource. However, for many families, a reluctance to seek help is an integral part of their problem. When this is the situation, the Family Service worker brings the service of the Agency into the home itself.
