History and Theory of Number as a Possible Secondary School Course

Frederick George Messner, Fordham University

Abstract

The science of number is one that has had a tremendous influence on the life of mankind. This seems a rather broad statement but merely because people seem to take so little cognizance of the importance of number. For number has given man a tool with which he can unravel the mysteries of the other sciences. This tool is the symbolization of number. And it is with this symbolization that I am to deal. Naturally a subject with such a scope as number has would take up team upon seam to thoroughly exhaust it, and I gravely doubt whether it is within the power of any one man to exhaust it. And since this tractate is limited in length so must it also be limited in scope. Hence I shall only touch upon those phases of the history and theory of number which I feel come within the scope of my title. The reason for taking this longitudinal treatment of the subject rather than latitudinal cross-section of just one outstanding feature in the topic will become clear when I later state the purpose of this paper.
